Ann Carli is a producer with a wealth of experience in the entertainment business and an exceptional eye for recognizing and nurturing up-and-coming talent in the fields of music, film and video. Having a foot in the film, music, and television worlds, she has built a diverse career in the making, marketing, and selling of works that represent a marriage of visuals and music.
Throughout her career, Carli has worn many hats - as executive, producer, consultant, and film music supervisor. From early in her career she worked with an eclectic musical mix, from BRIAN ENO, DAVID BOWIE, ROXY MUSIC, and THE STONE ROSES to DJ JAZZY JEFF AND THE FRESH PRINCE, A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, WHODINI, and R. KELLY, among many others. A pioneer in Hip-Hop, Carli was the second American employee at Jive Records (Zomba Music Group), working in all areas of the creative end of the company and finally as the head of Artist Development. During her many years at Jive, Ann helped the company grow into the world’s largest independent music entity. Some of Carli’s contributions to the business of hip-hop are chronicled in Dan Charnas’ seminal book: The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop.
In 1994, Carli produced her first feature film, I LIKE IT LIKE THAT, the film debut of writer/director Darnell Martin. She also served as the music supervisor on the project and put together the international eponymous hit title song. The soundtrack’s success spurred Sony Music to launch its Latin Music Division. The film was featured in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival, and won several Independent Spirit Awards.
In 1996, Carli moved from New York City to Los Angeles to head
Will Smith Enterprises. She executive produced the MEN IN BLACK soundtrack, for which she won an American Music Award. Carli was also instrumental in re-launching Will Smith’s for the second time in the music business. She executive produced Smith’s solo album, BIG WILLIE STYLE, which sold over 10 million copies worldwide, spawned numerous hit records, and won Grammy and MTV Video Music Awards.
In early 2000, Ann opened Fuzzy Bunny Films, a multi-media company based in Los Angeles. As a producer Carli sees herself as a ‘midwife’ for the projects of writers, directors, musicians and other creative visionaries helping them realize their ideas on screen or in the studio. Her unique combination of experience, creative empathy, business acumen and problem solving ability make her well suited for the job.
After over a decade, Fuzzy Bunny Films continues to produce various forms of media and entertainment with Carli at the helm. Carli also consults for a number of music business clients, both established and developing artists. She has worked closely with multi-Grammy winning R&B singer R. KELLY during his most recent reemergence onto the music scene. She was instrumental in the creation of Kelly’s song “Sign of a Victory” which became the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Most recently Carli produced the newest chapters of the pop cultural phenomenon TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET (a series that she helped create) for IFC TV, garnering the highest ratings in the channel history for original programming.
She is also consulting and producing for Russell Simmons's new YouTube venture, All Def Digital network.
Fuzzy Bunny currently has several projects in development, including a Broadway musical, a co-production feature film project with Chile, two television series and a film project with Jeremy Thomas and Stephen Frears.
Carli is currently working on her first novel, THE CARP THAT SWIMS BEFORE ME. She has had several short stories published in literary magazines and anthologies.
